Two hours on the Esplanade costs £6.00. Two hours at the Splashworld car park 120 metres away costs £1.70. Every Sefton tariff in Southport, and the free bays.
Two hours in Sefton’s Esplanade car park costs £6.00, because the Esplanade has a single flat charge for the whole day and no shorter option.
Two hours in the Dunes Leisure and Splashworld car park costs £1.70. The two car parks share a road, share the postcode PR8 1RR, and sit about 120 metres apart, measured from the council’s own map coordinates.
Nothing at either entrance tells you that. It is the single most useful thing to know about parking in Southport, and it is worth £4.30 every time you get it right.

Southport car parks and what they charge
Sefton publishes no tariff table. The prices live in pop-up boxes on the council’s find car parks map, one car park at a time. Here they are together.

Three things stand out.
Floral Hall charges around the clock. It is the only Southport car park with no closing time on its tariff, so an overnight stay is chargeable there and free at every other council site once the machines stop.
Tulketh Street is a four-hour maximum. It is the cheapest way to spend four hours in the town centre at £3.80, but you cannot stay longer, and there is no over-four-hours price to buy.
The Sands at Ainsdale says “including bank holidays” in as many words. Do not assume a Monday in August is free there.
On-street: £3.50 for two hours, and a Sunday charge
Sefton splits Southport’s kerbside into a Red central zone and a set of outer zones. The approved 2026/27 charges are identical for the first four hours.

That is a real rise, not a freeze. The council’s own fees schedule shows every Southport on-street band going up on 1 April 2026: 30 minutes from 90p to £1.00, an hour from £1.70 to £1.80, two hours from £3.30 to £3.50, four hours from £5.50 to £6.00, and the outer-zone all-day rate from £8.00 to £9.00. The comparison column in that schedule shows what CPI alone would have given, £5.71 for four hours; the council rounded to £6.00.
Compare that with Tulketh Street at £3.80 for four hours. The kerb outside the shop costs £2.20 more than the car park two streets away.
On the charging hours, be careful. Sefton does not publish the current Southport on-street hours anywhere on its website. The last figure it put in writing is in its own committee record from 20 April 2016, when the Cabinet Member approved orders to “extend the hours of operation of pay and display parking to 8am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and 11am to 6pm Sunday”. Sunday charging in Southport dates from that decision. Ten years on we cannot confirm that every street still runs those hours, so read the plate before you pay.
Where you can still park free
- Botanic Gardens, Verulam Road, Churchtown PR9 8QF. Free, and it is the large car park nearest Churchtown village.
- RSPB Marshside, Marshside Road at the Marine Drive junction. Free.
- Fairways, PR9 0LA. Still there, but the council now states it is “no longer operating as a Park & Ride service”.
- Birkdale station, 90 free spaces. This is the one worth knowing. Merseyrail runs more than 40 free park and ride car parks, and Southport is one of only three on the entire network that charges. Birkdale is the first stop out of Southport and its car park is free. So is Ainsdale with 56 spaces, Freshfield with 82, and Formby with 126.
Southport station itself has 419 spaces and is pay and display. Merseyrail does not publish the tariff on its station car parking page, so we are not going to guess at it. Its Southport station page also records no blue badge parking at the station.
Overnight parking is not allowed at any of the free Merseyrail car parks.
The beaches
Southport’s on-beach car park is closed. Sefton’s own beaches page says the “Southport on-beach car park is currently closed due to poor sand condition” and points visitors to the Marine Drive car park instead. Green Sefton rangers check the sand and will reopen it when it is safe. No reopening date has been given.
Ainsdale beach is open for parking from 1 April to 30 September, 10am to 6pm. It costs £10 for the day. A season ticket is £80, or £40 for Sefton residents and for hybrid and electric vehicles. Parking can be cut back or closed on the tide, in bad weather, for events or for emergencies.
Permits
Sefton charges £30 for a permit, and it lasts two years. That is the same price for a resident permit, a visitor permit, a special permit and a doctor’s permit. Changing vehicle is the only thing that triggers a further charge.
The rules differ between the two Southport schemes.
- Resident Privileged Parking zones. One resident permit per vehicle registered at the address, plus one visitor permit that can be displayed in any vehicle parked at your property.
- Southport town centre. Only one permit per house or flat, and no visitor permits at all.

Permits are applied for and renewed through Sefton’s online permit portal.
Suspending a bay, for a skip or a removal van, costs £25 a day for commercial use and £25 a month for residential use.
Blue badge
A Blue Badge application costs £10 in Sefton, the standard fee across every English council, and is made through GOV.UK. Sefton’s own blue badge page does not set out where badge holders can park in the borough.
Two specifics that are written down. Under the council’s Parking Charges Order, badge holders are exempt from the charge at the Esplanade car park. And Formby Pool is the opposite: its listing says outright that “Disabled badge holders are not exempt from charges”. Do not assume the exemption travels across the borough.
Sefton also runs a scheme for a disabled parking bay outside your home.
