Southport station is the end of the line in every direction, which shapes how people here travel. There are four trains an hour to Liverpool, a direct hourly run into central Manchester, and no direct train to London at all. That last point catches people out, so this page sets out what actually runs, how long it takes, what the walk-up fares are, and when the last train home leaves.

Southport is 32 minutes from the West Coast Main Line at Wigan, and that connection is what the London journey really turns on.

Liverpool: the everyday journey

Merseyrail’s Northern Line runs from Southport to Liverpool Central in 47 minutes, and it is the reason the line matters. Trains leave Southport every 15 minutes through the working day, calling at Birkdale, Ainsdale, Freshfield, Formby, Hightown, Hall Road, Blundellsands and Crosby, Waterloo, Seaforth and Litherland, Bootle and Sandhills on the way in.

The walk-up fare is £8.50 for an anytime day single and £8.70 for an anytime day return, which is one of the better value stretches of railway in the North West given the distance covered.

Last train home: the final useful service leaves Liverpool Central at 23:39 and reaches Southport at 00:26. There is a 23:55 departure but it only runs as far as Sandhills, so on a night out the 23:39 is your real deadline.

Because every station on the line is a stop rather than a request, this is also the practical way to reach Formby’s pinewoods and Crosby beach without a car, and it is why the National Trust asks visitors to Formby to come by train on busy days.

Manchester: direct, but only about once an hour

Northern runs a direct train from Southport to Manchester Oxford Road in 1 hour 15 minutes, going out through Burscough Bridge, Parbold, Appley Bridge and Wigan Wallgate before running in through Salford. For Piccadilly you stay on to Oxford Road and change there for the two-minute hop, making 1 hour 23 minutes door to door.

There is a second routing via Bolton, which takes about 1 hour 28 minutes and sometimes has cheaper advance fares.

Walk-up fares are £16.40 anytime day single and £22.00 anytime day return on the via-Wigan route. Off peak, an anytime day return drops to £16.20 and Northern advance singles start around £8.10. Note the fares are routed: the “via Wigan” ticket is cheaper than the unrouted one, so check what you are buying.

Last train home: the 22:35 from Manchester Piccadilly, changing at Bolton, gets into Southport at 23:58. After that you are looking at a very long night via Liverpool.

London: there is no direct train, and that is the whole story

Southport lost its through London service years ago. Every journey to London from here involves at least one change, and the fastest scheduled option on a normal weekday is 3 hours 9 minutes. There are two sensible ways to do it.

Via Wigan (the fastest). Take the 08:03 Northern service to Wigan Wallgate, arriving 08:35. Walk across to Wigan North Western, which is the neighbouring station on the West Coast Main Line and about a minute’s walk, then take Avanti West Coast at 09:13 into London Euston at 11:12. The Avanti leg alone is 1 hour 59 minutes. Most of the extra time in the total is waiting for the connection.

Via Liverpool (the simpler). Take Merseyrail to Liverpool Central, walk up to Lime Street, and take Avanti direct to Euston in about 2 hours 20 minutes. Total journey around 3 hours 42 minutes on the morning pattern, but with a single, well-signed change and a proper station to wait in.

Walk-up fares to London are steep: £184.50 for an anytime single and £369.00 anytime return. The off-peak fare on the Liverpool routings is much kinder at £80.90 single and £115.70 return, and Avanti advance singles run well below that if you book ahead.

What it means for you. If London is an occasional trip, book an advance ticket and go via Liverpool for the easier change. If it is a regular work journey, the Wigan connection is the one to learn, because the Wigan North Western to Euston leg is under two hours and Wigan is only half an hour away. Either way, budget three hours rather than the two the Avanti timetable suggests.

The £2 event fare

For 2026 the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority is funding £2 return Merseyrail fares to Southport, £1 for children, from any station on the Merseyrail network, for six events. That covers the Southport Flower Show (20 to 23 August), the Southport Air Show (29 to 30 August), the British Musical Fireworks Championship (26 to 27 September) and Books Alive (24 to 31 October), as well as May’s Big Top Festival and Food and Drink Festival. Tickets are sold at Merseyrail ticket offices and through Tap and Go (Sefton Council).

On flower show and air show weekends the town centre car parks fill early and the roads into town are under construction, so the £2 fare is worth knowing about even if you normally drive.

Season tickets

Season ticket prices change with the annual fares review and with which zones you add, so we are not going to quote a figure we cannot stand behind.
